Official: Hungary is not a democratic country, Fidesz disgruntled

The European Parliament passed a report on the state of the rule of law in Hungary on Thursday. Ruling party Fidesz blasted the European Parliament for “still busily attacking Hungary even amid the current crisis”.

According to the report approved with 433 votes in favour, 123 against and 28 abstentions, European Union values are under threat in Hungary, and the country “can no longer be considered a full democracy”.

The report says democracy and fundamental rights in Hungary had further deteriorated through the “deliberate and systematic efforts of the Hungarian government” since the EP launched the Article 7 procedure against the country in 2018. The protection of EU values enshrined in the bloc’s founding treaties have deteriorated since 2018, the report said, adding that the situation had been “exacerbated by EU inaction”. The lack of decisive EU action, it said, had contributed to the emergence of a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”.

The report said the state of Hungary’s justice system, corruption, conflicts of interest and human rights remained key concerns, as did the functioning of the country’s constitutional and electoral system and freedom of expression, including media pluralism.

It also lists academic and religious freedom, freedom of association, the right to equal treatment, including LGBTQ+ rights, minority rights, the rights of migrants, asylum seekers and refugees as “problematic” areas. The report calls on the European Commission to make full use of all tools at its disposal, especially the mechanism in the EU budget linking funding to the rule of law, to remedy the situation.

The MEPs who backed the report also urged the EC not to approve Hungary’s post-pandemic recovery plan until the country has fully complied with all relevant European Semester recommendations and implemented all the relevant judgements of the EU court and the European Court of Human Rights.

They also called on the executive body to exclude Hungary from funding cohesion programmes where there is suspicion of the misuse of EU funds or rule-of-law violations. Also, EU funds should be distributed through local governments rather than government organisations, they said.

Fidesz is upset

In response, Fidesz said in a statement: “The people of Europe are enduring an energy crisis thanks to Brussels’ failed sanctions, yet the left-wing European Parliament’s priority, even so, is to attack Hungary.” “Brussels wants to punish Hungary … and withhold the money that is due to the country,” it added.

Fidesz attributed the EP vote to the government’s refusal to welcome refugees fleeing their countries torn by war into Hungary (who the government calls illegal migrants) and let LGBTQ+ children learn about themselves and feel safe among their peers, as well as its opposition to “Brussels’ sanctions that have caused the energy crisis”.

Referring to Hungarian MEP Klára Dobrev, the statement decried Hungarian left-wing MEPs “led by Ms. Gyurcsány” for “working against their own country”.

  1. Ah. Like the EU’s Failed COVID vaccine roll out. Where we purchased 5 million doses of China’s Sinopharm vaccine (not approved) as well as Sputnik V. Which it later turned out we paid too much for, and effectiveness was also an issue (surplus deaths, anyone)?

Then, in May of 2021 – Gergely Gulyas confirmed that Hungary (as the only EU exception) had decided not to be part of the EU joint vaccine purchase. We know best, the EU is wrong!

Oh wait. Fast forward 2022 … Hungary has ordered a total of 9.5 million doses of Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccines in the EU procurement launched due to the prevalence of Omicron …

Evil, evil EU. Look what you made us do!

  2. The EU’s hate and disrespect towards conservative countries that do not agree with their suicidal agenda is insane.
Russia is laughing at their sanctions and at this rate might also earn another ally.

  3. Hit the nail on the head. Fidesz backed into a corner. Wants and needs the money but what’s their next move and who are they going to blame for their own corrupt governing . Another holiday perhaps to relieve the stress?

  4. Hungary knows – EU knows and “wider” Europe and the Global World – KNOWS, that Hungary, is in a state of IMPLODING.
The present Government, because if its Control & Dictatorial manner – its POWER over citizens, its “law” of what through media – radio, television, newspapers and all other forms of 21st information technology, the PICTURE in FULL of the Imploding Hungarian Government, is HIDDEN, from the Citizens of Hungary.
Imploding – collapse or cause to collapse violently inwards.

Thats what FACTUALLY is HAPPENING in Hungary.

    REMEMBER:
    “When the Yoke is BROKEN,
    the Burden is Removed.

Hungary has insurmountable evidence – who our YOKE is – and the “need” to break it REMOVE it – if we ANY chance retaining – that’s if we WANT – DEMOCRACY in Hungary.

  5. To almost everyone with an open mind, AND both eyes opened, the news is not new at all, but what I am surprised about is that Hungary (and it’s lack of democracy) is now THE topic even in New Zealand, Portugal, Australia, Canada, Italy and 😮 even in Singapore.

People get what they vote for, no doubt, the majority of voting Hungarians must have seen something other than what I see.

If a country is accepted into the EU, that country AGREES to abide by the rules and regulations,

  6. So – the Liberal Elite Soros Lapdogs, again?

433 votes in favour, 123 against and 28 abstentions … Looking at the numbers. this probably means … It wasn’t a Liberal Leftist Plot?

  7. @Ane
“…Russia is laughing at their sanctions…”
No, We are not laughing at anything nowadays, move here and you’ll see.
I’d take your “hateful” EU anydays over Putins Russia.

  8. I may have the answer; What Hungary and Poland (maybe the rest of the V4 too) need to do is “follow Switzerland’s example, also “Land locked” in the EU, and pull out and stay out of the ‘EU”, but stay in the “Shenghen Zone” like they. They can all then travel freely, but not have the “Non-Elected EU” or the “UNION”, screw around with the country and it’s cultural ethics and other values or any thing else for that matter.
